What Is SD (Super Dollfie)?
Super Dollfie (SD) is a line of articulated ball-jointed dolls launched by Japanese manufacturer Volks in 1998. The product series was developed under the supervision of Akihiro Enku, and “Dollfie” remains a registered trademark owned by Volks.
Coined as a portmanteau combining the words “Doll” and “Figure”, the name “Dollfie” was prefixed with “Super” to embody the brand’s ambition to reach “the pinnacle of doll craftsmanship”, hence the official name Super Dollfie. Famous for its classic 1/3 scale size and sophisticated artistic sculpting, Super Dollfie is widely shortened to “SD”. It was also among the first products of this category to officially adopt the Japanese term Ningyo (human-form doll) within its official product descriptions.
Super Dollfie gained explosive popularity throughout Asian markets. In the early days of the hobby, this widespread fame led many new enthusiasts to colloquially call all ball-jointed dolls (BJDs) “SD dolls”, even though SD is merely one specific brand line rather than a general term for all ball-jointed dolls.
